17th Century by J. Byron, Punta Arenas lies at the entrance to the Strait of
Magellan and is the gateway to Antarctica, a land of snowcapped mountains,
icebergs and frozen fjords. The city is dominated by the mountain Cerro de la
Cruz, from which there is a spectacular view of Punta Arenas, its orderly
streets, colorful tin roofs, and the Tierra del Fuego. The city overlooks the
Strait of Magellan and Otway Sound, home to colonies of sea lions and Magellanic
penguins.

On the
Carnival Splendor
South American cruise, Punta Arenas and Puerto Montt are tender
ports.
Will we use Carnival Splendor lifeboats as tenders or do the ports
have tenders available?
If either port has tenders available, are they the large kind that
can hold 200 or more passengers?

I checked with the ship and they informed me that they will use the
port tenders and if needed a few of our own, as well. The tender
rides are not long so debarkation in these ports should be fine.

pesos, but without credit, so you'll need to buy some prepaid minutes to be able
to call.
You will board
a ferry boat for the approximately 2-hour navigation heading
north into the Strait of Magellan.
Enjoy a guided walk for
approximately one hour on marked pathways of this island
observing the Magellan penguins in their natural
habitat. This island is also home to cormorants and
seagulls and since this is a wildlife reserve, no tourist
facilities can be found here.
These Magellan penguins return every year to this
spot between October and March to lay eggs and raise
their young. They bury their eggs in the sandy burrows
and under shrubs. At this time of year most of the
chicks will have hatched.
These animals are naturally curious and untamed and,
if approached too quickly, they will scamper into their
burrows or try to reach the water. Do not attempt to
touch them as their bites can inflict serious wounds.
Walk back to the ferry and sail back to Punta
Arenas, where your bus will be waiting to take you back
to the pier.
Notes; A boxed lunch will be given to you onboard the
ferry. There are steep iron steps on the ferry that may be
slippery when wet. The ferry journey will be subject to
weather conditions. A windbreaker and warm clothes are
recommended, including comfortable walking shoes for uneven
and slippery terrain.
