Montserrat by Rail - Depart 9:30 AM Arrive 2:00 PM

The rugged Montserrat Mountain range northwest of Barcelona is one of Spain's most picturesque areas.

On this fascinating excursion you will:

  • Learn, like jagged teeth, the rocky formations soar skyward creating unparalleled natural beauty.
  • Discover the mysterious peaks which have inspired many legends and motivated Wagner to write some of his most beautiful arias.
  • Your motor coach will drive you, for approximately one hour, to the rack railway where you will board a train for the 14-minute journey to the top of the mountain.
  • Here, you will have an exceptional view of the Montserrat mountains’ spectacular panorama. The scenic countryside, on this 40-mile ride, soon becomes craggy as you near the mountains.
  • See the famous Montserrat Monastery, founded as a Benedictine Abbey during the 11th century, that is firmly perched on a ledge hanging 2,400 feet above the Llogregat River, promoting the most amazing photographic moments. Here, the 12th century Black Virgin of Montserrat awaits your discovery.
  • Visit the beautiful monastery with your guide, enjoying free time afterwards, plus the chance of maybe listening to the famous Boys’ Choir. Your drive back to the ship will be by motor coach.

NOTE: October 12th, 09 is a Public Holiday. Therefore, all areas will be busy and some shops and restaurants may be closed. Some souvenir shops will be open. This excursion may operate in reverse.

Comfortable shoes, water, a light jacket and a sun hat are recommended. There are downhill and uneven paths, as well as cobblestones to walk over.

The Boy's Choir can not be seen on Saturdays or during the months of July and August and may be cancelled at any time due to reasons beyond our control.

Montserrat is at 2,380 feet and therefore a light jacket and appropriate clothes are recommended.

At the end of your excursion you will have the option to be dropped off at the bottom of Las Ramblas for shopping.

A free shuttle bus is provided to take you back to the ship. Expect long lines to view the Black Virgin inside the Abbey.
